Kielder Water & Forest Park, Bellingdon
Kielder's programme of visual art started in 1995 and has evolved and expanded up to the present day. The Kielder Partnership that runs the programme developed their interest in the visual arts as part of their Leisure and Tourism development plan, which aims to increase both the number and diversity of the visitors to the area through a variety of strategies, visual arts development being one of them. A series of permanent sculptures commissioned during 1996 and 1997 ranged from Andrea Wilkinson's 'Flock' and Alan Franklin's 'Skedaddle', to Chris Drury's 'Wave Chamber' and Tania Kovat's 'Viewpoint' amongst others. In 2000, James Turrell officially opened the Cat Cairn 'Kielder Skyspace' and further permanent commissions continue the theme of 'the shelter', involving the Japan 2001 Programme and the establishment of a series of architect in residence/fellowships.
